The Shepherdson Family

by Clair Shepherdson

The Shepherdson Family is a family history and a collection of personal life stories, primarily from the descendants of William Shepherdson Sr. The history and genealogical information begins in Yorkshire, England with the marriage of a William Shepherdson to an Ann Hobson on June 22, 1762. The descendants of this William have been tracked for the next two generations to a Thomas Shepherdson who, with his wife Elizabeth, emigrated from England to Canada about 1857. They are listed in the 1861 census for the Township of Eramosa, Wellington County, Ontario with one child, George, who was less than one year old at that time.

This book is very skimpy on details of the life of Thomas and Elizabeth, both in England and in Canada, but does briefly document their five children, all born in Canada. The major portion of the book is based on the life and descendants of their fourth child, William. This William was a farmer and an inventor and became very well known as a timber frame barn builder. He also, with his sons, operated a saw mill, a blacksmith shop, a shingle mill and provided other services for the local trades in Wellington County.

In 1910, he moved his family to Temiskaming, in Northern Ontario, bringing with them their tools, farm equipment, saw mill, shingle mill and, of course, their knowledge and experience. They were pioneers in a new land. William and his sons started all over again. They built barns and operated their saw mills and planing mills, farmed and started in the construction and building business. Soon they had several operations going simultaneously, each supporting the others. The family grew and so did the businesses. In spite of at least three disastrous fires and the great Depression in the 1930s they kept going. The next generation of children began arriving and they too became a part of the several operations.

The industrious and aggressive nature of this pioneer family has spilled over into the generations that have followed. Many of them still live in the area and many have moved on to take their places in the business world elsewhere. The book documents some of this generation's life stories.
