ROY ITO AWARD CALL FOR PROPOSALS September 14, 2007

The Japanese Canadian National Museum (JCNM) is pleased to announce The Roy Ito Award. Given by Mrs. Mitsy Ito in memory of her late husband Roy Ito, this is a one a one-time award to conduct research and publish about the Japanese Canadian experience.

To carry on the spirit of Roy Ito, Mrs. Ito has created this opportunity to work with Roy Ito's papers, which have been generously donated to the JCNM by the Ito Family. Thanks to Mrs. Ito's gift, the Roy Ito collection is now fully arranged, described, and accessible for researchers at the museum. A copy of the Roy Ito Collection archival description is available online at http://www.jcnm.ca/resources.htm .

The $5,000 Roy Ito Award is for a scholarly research project working with the Roy Ito Collection as a main resource to produce a publishable result to carry on the spirit of Itos work. Additionally, a report and presentation to a public forum is required on the completion of the project.

The JCNM is now calling for proposals by interested individuals to undertake a project working with the Roy Ito Collection at the JCNM. The award will be made to a project recommended by the award selection committee. Proposals from emerging writers and scholars and that indicate multiple funding sources to match the award are encouraged.

Proposals must include the following:

  • Name and address of the applicant

  • Project title

  • Outline of the project and objectives, and description of how the project fits into larger research/writing/creative goals

  • Project timeline

  • Budget including other funding received or sought

  • Preparations made to undertake the work

  • Description of the applicant's research and/or writing, and background with respect to the Japanese Canadian experience

  • Curriculum vitae including research/publication experience

  • Names of persons who may be consulted regarding the project

  • Additional supporting material may include:

  • Description of the applicant's program of studies (if a graduate student), institutional location (if a researcher), and/or community research experience (oral history or archival research projects, for example) or other affiliation.

  • Writing sample or an example of the applicant's creative work.

This call for proposals has been extended to September 14, 2007. Proposals must be received at the Japanese Canadian National Museum by 5:00 PM, and should be submitted in print format by mail or courier to the address indicated below.The JCNM will announce the proposed project selected for the award later in 2007.For further information and to make a proposal, please contact:
