A number of the awards programs exist for publishers, not authors, to submit their books for competition. These usually have quite a bit of prestige and cash attached to them. They are listed here because, as a writer, you should know about them as well. Many of you are small publishers; some of you have books published by smaller presses. If you think your book may qualify for an award, a quick consultation with your publisher may mean the difference between it being entered or not. Please know that the book awards were taking over a large portion of the book, so we have listed them in full on this page.

The French category is a new one for the Arthur Ellis Awards. "Crime" is defined as crime, detective, espionage, mystery, suspense, or thriller, and includes fictional or factual accounts of criminal doings and literary works with a criminous theme. CWCC-583 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence

Details:

The Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence was established in 2003 by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo to recognize British Columbia writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the Province. The inaugural recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence will be recognized as having: Written a substantial body of literary work throughout their career; and contributed significantly to the literary community of the Province.

Writers must be Canadian citizens or Permanant Residents who were born in British Columbia or whose principle place of residence has been British Columbia for the last five (5) full calendar years.

Writers who have written books in the following genres will be considered: Fiction; Poetry; Children's (including young adult fiction); Drama; Creative Non-fiction. Books may have been published anywhere in the world.

There shall only be one award given each year. Nominations will be accepted from publishers as well as writing and publishing organizations. Nominations consist of a completed Nomination Form and up to ten pages of typed supporting material. There is no limit to the number of nominations an organization can submit. Quality of research and writing are major considerations in the judging of this prize as are insight and originality. The writer must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the last five years. The book may have been published anywhere. Haig-Brown Regional Prize Prizes: $2,000 + Certificate Entry Fee: $30 Awarded to the author(s) of the book which contributes most to the enjoyment and understanding of British Columbia. The book may deal with any aspect of the province (people, history, geography, oc eanography, etc.) and must be original. Reprints, revised editions, guide books and how-to books are not considered for this prize. The book may have been published anywhere and the author may reside outside B.C. Sheila Egoff Children's Prize Prizes: $2,000 + Certificate Entry Fee: $30 Awarded to the author of novels, including chapter books, aimed at juveniles and young adults, as well as non-fiction books for children (including biography) which have not been highly illustrated The author must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Prize Prizes: $2,000 + Certificate Entry Fee: $30 Awarded to the author and illustrator of picture books, picture story books, and illustrated non-fiction books. The prize is shared by the author and the illustrator. The author and/or illustrator must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. The Bilson Award was established in 1988 in memory of Geoffrey Bilson, a respected historianand children's author who passed away in 1987. The $1,000 prize is awarded annually to the Canadian author of an outstanding work of historical fiction for young people. Canadian children's historical novels published between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006 will be eligible for the 2007 Bilson Award. The work must be literature of the fantastic, which includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic realism, and surrealism. The work must be a novel or novel-length short story collection. The author must be that is a Canadian Citizen (native or naturalized; resident in Canada or residing outside Canada) or Landed Immigrant in Canada.

Translations into English are considered on an equal footing with works written originally in English. Note, however, that only the first translation of a work is eligible. The work must be substantially text-based and have been published in book form. The work must be published and released during the calendar year 2006, (Note: if a work is published or released after December 31, regardless of stated copyright or publication dates, it may be considered the following year.) Note: If an eligible book was not considered by the jury in the year in which it was published, it may be considered the following year. However, once a book has been considered, it becomes ineligible.

The Sunburst Award Administration Committee and its researchers maintain annual reference lists of Canadian literature of the fantastic. We ecommend that writers and publishers check the list to ascertain that their work(s) are on the list. The purpose of the Hilda Neatby Prize in Women's History, awarded since 1983 by the Canadian Committee on Women's History at the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association, is to encourage the publication of scholarly articles in women's history and gender history as it relates to women, in Canadian journals and books. Two prizes are awarded, one for best article in English and the other one for best article in French. Any academic article published in Canada during the previous year and deemed to make an original and scholarly contribution to the field of women's history is eligible for nomination for the Neatby Prize. The Toronto Book Awards were first presented by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary and artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto.

These annual awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each shortlisted author (usually four to six) receives $1,000 and the winning author is awarded the remainder. The Toronto Book Awards Committee invites publishers and authors to submit books for consideration and review. Fiction and non-fiction books, published in English, for adults and/or children are eligible. Reprints, textbooks and manuscripts are not eligible. There are no separate categories; novels, short story collections, books of poetry, biographies, histories, social studies, children's books, books about sports, photographic collections, etc., are judged together. Established by the Fleck Family Foundation and the Canadian Children's Book Centre in May 1999 to recognize and raise the profile of exceptional non-fiction books for children by Canadian authors.

Open to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants; author, or author and illustrator of Canadian non-fiction for children; categories eligible are arts/culture, concept, science, biography, history, geography, reference, sports, activities, and pastimes, nominations by publisher for books published between May 1, 2006 and April 30, 2007.

Open to books based on an original subject or exploring a familiar subject in a new and interesting way written and illustrated by Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. The award goes to the author unless 40% or more of the text area is composed of original illustrations, in which case the award will be divided equally between author and illustrator. The Governor General's Literary Awards are given annually to the best English-language and the best French-language book in each of the seven categories of Fiction, Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, Drama, Children's Literature (text), Children's Literature (illustration) and Translation. Each laureate receives $15,000 and a specially crafted copy of the winning book. In addition, publishers of winning titles receive a $3,000 grant for the promotion of the prize-winning book. Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000.

Professional book publishers are invited to submit titles for consideration. Books must be first foreign or first Canadian edition trade books that have been written, translated or illustrated by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. In the Translation category, the original work, must also be a Canadian-authored title. English titles must be published and be available on the market between September 1, 2006 and September 30, 2007.

The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fictionis the only such award in Canada. The $3,000 annual award was established by the writer and literary journalist Edna Staebler in 1991 to encourage and recognize the Canadian writer of a first or second published book. The Marian Engel Award Prize (Established 1986) $15,000 The award is presented once a year to a female Canadian writer, not for a single book, but for a body of work and in anticipation of her future contribution to Canadian literature. All eligible female writers in mid-career are considered. For the purposes of this award, mid-career is defined as having published in Canada at least three books of literary merit which are predominantly fiction. The Writers' Trust of Canada's Matt Cohen Prize (Established 2001) Prizes: $20,000 Award recognizes a lifetime of distinguished work by a Canadian writer, working in either poetry or prose in either French or English.

The Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize (Established 1997) Prize:$15,000; $2,000 to finalists. For a novel or short-story collection that in the opinion of the judges is the year's best book of fiction.

The Nereus Writers' Trust Non-Fiction Prize (Established 1996) Prizes: $15,000 Awarded to the non-fiction book published that in the opinion of the judges is the year's best book of non-fiction.

The Writers' Trust of Canada's Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing (Established 2000) Prize:$15,000; $2,000 to finalists. Award is presented for a non-fiction book of outstanding literary merit that enlarges our understanding of contemporary Canadian political and social issues.

The Writers' Trust of Canada's Timothy Findley Award (Established 2003) Prizes: $15,000 Award serves to recognise a body of work (comprised of no less than three works of literary merit which are predominantly fiction) rather than a single book. All male Canadian writers are considered and no age restrictions apply. An independent jury selects the winner, and there is no submission process.

The Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature (Established 1963) Prizes: $15,000 Awarded to the author of a body of work in children's literature that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrates the highest literary standards.

The W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize (Established 1998) Prizes: $15,000 given annually to a writer who has produced an outstanding body of work, has acted during his/her career as a "caring mentor" for writers, and has published a work of fiction or had a new stage play produced during the three-year period specified for each competition. Every third year the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize will be awarded to a writer who works in French. Nominees must have an established track record of outstanding fiction or of produced stage plays which clearly demonstrates that they "didn't quit." It must be demonstrated that nominees have had a substantial impact as "caring mentors" by "looking over the shoulders" of other writers (in such ways as one-on-one advising, editing, teaching in writing workshops, in-residency stints). Nominees must be Canadian citizens. Members of the writing community (writers, playwrights, critics, publishers, directors, and/or artistic directors) may nominate candidates for this award. Letters of nomination must be seconded by another member of the writing community. Guidelines for the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize are currently being reviewed.

Publishing in Education Award (Established 1996) Prizes: Commemorative certificates for the writer and publisher; a hand crafted commemorative plaque for the publisher; specially designed seals for display on award winning books. This Award is presented to the Saskatchewan publisher of the best book produced as an educational resource, based on its value to educators at primary, secondary or post secondary levels, literary or artistic value, the quality of editing, book design, production and content

Deadlines for receiving books: July 31 for books published September 15 last year and July 31 of the current year. September 15 for books published BETWEEN AUGUST 1-SEPTEMBER of the current year. You may enter a book in one or more categories. You may enter more than one book in a category.

Send four copies of each book for the first category entered, thereafter send three books per category. Each entry must include: four copies of each title for the first submission, thereafter only three copies per category; a completed entry form; the author's phone number, fax, email and address (so winners can be contacted); $20 administration fee per title times the number of categories entered. Open to full-length novels or collections of short stories in English or in English translation by a Canadian citizens or permanent resident published by a Canadian publisher and for sale in Canada. Submission packages are available to publishers at http://www.scotiabankgillerprize.ca/guidelines.htm , who send their selection of eligible books to the Giller Prize Administrator. Publishers whose books are shortlisted are asked to contribute a nominal sum to marketing/promotion efforts.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize, valued at $50,000 (Cdn), is awarded annually to the author of the best Canadian full-length novel or collection of short stories published in English. In the event that a translation wins, $40,000 will be awarded to the author and $5,000 will be awarded to the translator. The Scotiabank Giller Prize, named for the late literary journalist Doris Giller, was founded in her honour by her husband, Jack Rabinovitch. The Prize was first awarded in 1994.

To be eligible, a book must be a first-edition full length novel or short story collection, written by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Collections of previously published work are not eligible. Any story collections containing work previously published in book form will not be eligible unless the number of new stories outweighs the number of previously published ones. To be eligible, a book must be published in English, either originally or in translation. (In the case of translation, the original work must be Canadian-authored). Books must be published in Canada in English between October 16 of the previous year and October 15 of the current year (Previous publication of a book in another language or in another country does not disqualify it). No entry shall be ineligible because its author has won either The Scotiabank Giller Prize or any other prize previously. All books must carry an ISBN number and be available for sale in bookstores in Canada. No self-published books shall be eligible (that is, titles authored by any senior officer of the book's publishing firm and/or books underwritten in part or in whole by the author). The decision of the judges as to whether a book is eligible shall be binding.

CONDITIONS OF THE PRIZE:

Any eligible book which is entered for The Scotiabank Giller Prize shall not qualify for the award unless its publisher agrees: for each shortlisted book, to pay $1,500 to The Giller Prize as a contribution towards shortlist advertising and promotion; to spend an appropriate sum on media advertising for the winning book; to prepare and encourage its nominated and/or winning author(s) to participate in all reasonable publicity associated with The Giller Prize; to use their best efforts to sticker copies of the shortlisted and/or winning book(s) with The Scotiabank Giller Prize seals (to be provided by The Prize) and, when including facsimiles of The Giller Prize seal on all reprints of the shortlisted and/or winning book(s), to secure the prior written approval of The Scotiabank Giller Prize with respect to artwork.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES:

Publishers may enter up to three full-length novels or short story collections, each of them scheduled for publication between October 16 of the previous year and October 15 of the current year. In addition to those three entries, publishers may submit books by authors who have previously won The Scotiabank Giller Prize or The Governor General's Award in the fiction category. Entries (finished books or galleys, not loose pages) are to be submitted according to the following schedule:

Books received after the final deadline will not be eligible. This list should include title(s), author(s), and date(s) of publication. The ScotiabankGiller Prize may, at any time, call in a book, even if that book has not been submitted. In that event, the publisher will be required to complete an entry form, submit the entry form along with five copies of the book to The Scotiabank Giller Prize, and comply with all other Rules and Regulations. Receipt of submissions will be acknowledged in writing by The Scotiabank Giller Prize. No book entered or called in will be returned to publishers. Each entry must be accompanied by the submission form along with press material on the submitted book, a current author biography and an 8x10 photo (or electronic image of the author sent by email) that can be reproduced for use in newspapers, magazines and on The Scotiabank Giller Prize website, www.scotiabankgillerprize.ca . If the submission is in the form of galleys, one copy of the finished book must be received by The Scotiabank Giller Prize (Elana Rabinovitch at the address above) by end of September and must be confirmed for publication on or before mid-October. Two copies of each shortlisted book, ideally in folded and collated form, should be retained by the publisher. These must be delivered to a designated book binder as soon as the shortlist has been announced. The Scotiabank Giller Prize will supply shortlisted publishers with the name and address of the bookbinder to which copies must be sent. The Scotiabank Giller Prize will bear the cost of this leather binding.

FINALISTS:

A shortlist of finalists will be announced at the beginning of October each Prize year. National publicity, promoting The Scotiabank Giller Prize and the shortlisted authors, will begin at that announcement and continue until after the winner is declared. The winner of The Giller Prize will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto in November. So that all shortlisted authors may attend that ceremony, The Scotiabank Giller Prize will bear the cost of travel and overnight accommodation for authors who live outside the greater Toronto area. The jury panel will select the shortlist and the winner in private deliberations immediately preceding each announcement. Publishers should be aware that they will receive no advance notice of the finalists or the winner.

Books are entered by their publishers, not their authors. There are four prizes - The Trillium Book Award one for English and one for French and the Trillium Book Award for Poetry for a first, second or third book of poetry, one in English and one in French.

The Trillium Book Award was established by the Ontario government in 1987 to "recognise excellence, support marketing and to foster increased public awareness of the quality and diversity of Ontario writers and writing." In 1994, the prize was expanded to include the Prix Trillium, a separate prize for Ontario's francophone writers and their publishers. This year, the awards program is being expanded to include the Trillium Book Award for Poetry to recognize achievement by new, emerging poets in English and French, and their publishers. The prize for the traditional Trillium Book Award/Prix Trillium honouring works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, children's books and more established poets, in both English and French, is $20,000, plus $2,500 to the publisher. The recipient of the Trillium Book Award for Poetry, for a first, second or third work of poetry receives $10,000, and $2,000 for the publisher. The publishers of all Trillium Award finalists receive a grant for the book's promotion prior to the announcement of the winner.

Anthologies, new editions, re-issues and translations are not eligible. Ontario writers who have lived in Ontario for at least three out of the past five years and who have been published anywhere in the world are eligible. Their publishers are invited to submit titles to the Ontario Media Development Corporation for consideration. Titles must have been published for the first time in the 2006 calendar year, remain in print in that year and be available for sale in the spring of 2007. Four copies must be submitted for jury and promotional use: these will not be returned.

The Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature

(Established 1963) Prizes: $15,000 Awarded to the author of a body of work in children's literature that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrates the highest literary standards.

The W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize

(Established 1998) Prizes: $15,000 given annually to a writer who has produced an outstanding body of work, has acted during his/her career as a "caring mentor" for writers, and has published a work of fiction or had a new stage play produced during the three-year period specified for each competition. Every third year the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize will be awarded to a writer who works in French. Nominees must have an established track record of outstanding fiction or of produced stage plays which clearly demonstrates that they "didn't quit." It must be demonstrated that nominees have had a substantial impact as "caring mentors" by "looking over the shoulders" of other writers (in such ways as one-on-one advising, editing, teaching in writing workshops, in-residency stints). Nominees must be Canadian citizens. Members of the writing community (writers, playwrights, critics, publishers, directors, and/or artistic directors) may nominate candidates for this award.
