A number of the awards programs exist for publishers, not authors, to submit their books for competition. These usually have quite a bit of prestige and cash attached to them. They are listed here because, as a writer, you should know about them as well. Many of you are small publishers; some of you have books published by smaller presses. If you think your book may qualify for an award, a quick consultation with your publisher may mean the difference between it being entered or not. Please know that the book awards were taking over a large portion of the book, so we have listed them in full on this page.

To qualify, the book must be: a book of literary merit with an ISBN number; written in English or French; published in 2007 Written by authors residing in the City of Ottawa who are Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status and a minimum of 12 months prior to either or both dates. City staff reserve the right to ask for proof of Ottawa residency. Residency is established by: a current Ontario driver's licence indicating a current Ottawa address or a personal CCRA Notice of Assessment indicating a current residential address in Ottawa.

Trillium Book Award / Prix Trillium

Requires an official submission form. Open to published works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, children's literature, and poetry. Ontario authors only. Books are entered by their publishers, not their authors. There are four prizes - The Trillium Book Award one for English and one for French and the Trillium Book Award for Poetry for a first, second or third book of poetry, one in English and one in French.
The Trillium Book Award was established by the Ontario government in 1987 to "recognise excellence, support marketing and to foster increased public awareness of the quality and diversity of Ontario writers and writing." In 1994, the prize was expanded to include the Prix Trillium, a separate prize for Ontario's francophone writers and their publishers. This year, the awards program is being expanded to include the Trillium Book Award for Poetry to recognize achievement by new, emerging poets in English and French, and their publishers. The prize for the traditional Trillium Book Award/Prix Trillium honouring works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, children's books and more established poets, in both English and French, is $20,000, plus $2,500 to the publisher. The recipient of the Trillium Book Award for Poetry, for a first, second or third work of poetry receives $10,000, and $2,000 for the publisher. The publishers of all Trillium Award finalists receive a grant for the book's promotion prior to the announcement of the winner.
Anthologies, new editions, re-issues and translations are not eligible. Ontario writers who have lived in Ontario for at least three out of the past five years and who have been published anywhere in the world are eligible. Their publishers are invited to submit titles to the Ontario Media Development Corporation for consideration. Titles must have been published for the first time in the 2008 calendar year, remain in print in that year and be available for sale in the spring of 2009. Four copies must be submitted for jury and promotional use: these will not be returned.

The Bilson Award was established in 1988 in memory of Geoffrey Bilson, a respected historian and children's author who passed away in 1987. The $1,000 prize is awarded annually to the Canadian author of an outstanding work of historical fiction for young people. Canadian children's historical novels published the previous year will be eligible for the Bilson Award. Please note that, in order to weigh the historical fiction submissions fairly, the Committee has determined that picture books, short story collections by more than one author, and plots involving time travel are no longer eligible.

The Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence was established in 2003 by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo to recognize British Columbia writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the Province. The inaugural recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence will be recognized as having: Written a substantial body of literary work throughout their career; and contributed significantly to the literary community of the Province.
Writers must be Canadian citizens or Permanant Residents who were born in British Columbia or whose principle place of residence has been British Columbia for the last five (5) full calendar years.
Writers who have written books in the following genres will be considered: Fiction; Poetry; Children's (including young adult fiction); Drama; Creative Non-fiction. Books may have been published anywhere in the world.
There shall only be one award given each year. Nominations will be accepted from publishers as well as writing and publishing organizations. Nominations consist of a completed Nomination Form and up to ten pages of typed supporting material. There is no limit to the number of nominations an organization can submit. The Toronto Book Awards were first presented by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary and artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto.
These annual awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each short-listed author (usually four to six) receives $1,000 and the winning author is awarded the remainder.
The Toronto Book Awards Committee invites publishers and authors to submit books for consideration and review. Fiction and non-fiction books, published in English, for adults and/or children are eligible. Reprints, textbooks and manuscripts are not eligible. There are no separate categories; novels, short story collections, books of poetry, biographies, histories, social studies, children's books, books about sports, photographic collections, etc., are judged together. The Governor General's Literary Awards are given annually to the best English-language and the best French-language book in each of the seven categories of Fiction, Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, Drama, Children's Literature (text), Children's Literature (illustration) and Translation. Each laureate receives $15,000 and a specially crafted copy of the winning book. In addition, publishers of winning titles receive a $3,000 grant for the promotion of the prize-winning book. Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000.
Professional book publishers are invited to submit titles for consideration. Books must be first foreign or first Canadian edition trade books that have been written, translated or illustrated by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. In the Translation category, the original work, must also be a Canadian-authored title. English titles must be published and be available on the market between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009.

The Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction is the only such award in Canada. The $3,000 annual award was established by the writer and literary journalist Edna Staebler in 1991 to encourage and recognize the Canadian writer of a first or second published book. The book must have a Canadian locale or a particular Canadian significance. The award is now $10,000
Creative non-fiction is literary rather than journalistic. The writer does not merely give information, but intimately shares an experience with the reader by telling a factual story with the devices of fiction, original research, well-crafted interpretive writing, personal discovery or experience, the creative use of language or approach to the subject matter, dialogue, and narrative.

The Kobzar Literary Award is a biannual award, recognizing an outstanding contribution to Canadian literature through the author's representation of a Ukranian-Canadian theme.
Works may be submitted by writers, publishers or literary agents. Each nomination must be submitted with the author's consent. All books must have an ISBN, and be distributed in book form in Canada. Now divided into two awards: one for non-fiction, and one for books on social justice. The award recognizes exceptionally well-written and researched work by a freelance writer by providing financial support while s/he completes a magazine or book-length project (non-fiction). Dave Greber had a passion for social justice, so stories that delve into issues associated with social justice are strongly encouraged. Dave Greber knew that many freelance writers struggled to make ends meet as they completed lengthy projects. For this reason, the award is designed to provide some support to a writer with a contract to publish a work of non-fiction prior to publication .
Submit: (1) five copies of a chapter of the self-authored book or five copies of an excerpt from the magazine article that represents the work being readied for the publication named in the contract; (2) a one-page description of your life and work; (3) a list of your published works; (4) complete contact information (name, address, mailing address, telephones numbers and email address).

The Writers' Trust of Canada's Matt Cohen Prize (Established 2001) Prizes: $20,000 Award recognizes a lifetime of distinguished work by a Canadian writer, working in either poetry or prose in either French or English.

The Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature (Established 1963) Prizes: $15,000 Awarded to the author of a body of work in children's literature that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrates the highest literary standards.
The W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize (Established 1998) Prizes: $15,000 given annually to a writer who has produced an outstanding body of work, has acted during his/her career as a "caring mentor" for writers, and has published a work of fiction or had a new stage play produced during the three-year period specified for each competition. Every third year the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize will be awarded to a writer who works in French. Nominees must have an established track record of outstanding fiction or of produced stage plays which clearly demonstrates that they "didn't quit." It must be demonstrated that nominees have had a substantial impact as "caring mentors" by "looking over the shoulders" of other writers (in such ways as one-on-one advising, editing, teaching in writing workshops, in-residency stints). Nominees must be Canadian citizens. Members of the writing community (writers, playwrights, critics, publishers, directors, and/or artistic directors) may nominate candidates for this award. Letters of nomination must be seconded by another member of the writing community. Guidelines for the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize are currently being reviewed.

The John Glassco Translation Prize is awarded by the Literary Translators' Association of Canada each fall. The Scotiabank Giller Prize

Open to full-length novels or collections of short stories in English or in English translation by a Canadian citizens or permanent resident published by a Canadian publisher and for sale in Canada. Submission packages are available to publishers through the website, who send their selection of eligible books to the Giller Prize Administrator. Publishers whose books are short-listed are asked to contribute a nominal sum to marketing/promotion efforts.
The Scotiabank Giller Prize, valued at $50,000 (Cdn), is awarded annually to the author of the best Canadian full-length novel or collection of short stories published in English. In the event that a translation wins, $40,000 will be awarded to the author and $5,000 will be awarded to the translator. The Scotiabank Giller Prize, named for the late literary journalist Doris Giller, was founded in her honour by her husband, Jack Rabinovitch. The Prize was first awarded in 1994.
To be eligible, a book must be a first-edition full length novel or short story collection, written by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Collections of previously published work are not eligible. Any story collections containing work previously published in book form will not be eligible unless the number of new stories outweighs the number of previously published ones. To be eligible, a book must be published in English, either originally or in translation. (In the case of translation, the original work must be Canadian-authored). Books must be published in Canada in English between October 16 of the previous year and October 15 of the current year (Previous publication of a book in another language or in another country does not disqualify it). No entry shall be ineligible because its author has won either The Scotiabank Giller Prize or any other prize previously. All books must carry an ISBN number and be available for sale in bookstores in Canada. No self-published books shall be eligible (that is, titles authored by any senior officer of the book's publishing firm and/or books underwritten in part or in whole by the author). The decision of the judges as to whether a book is eligible shall be binding.
CONDITIONS OF THE PRIZE:
Any eligible book which is entered for The Scotiabank Giller Prize shall not qualify for the award unless its publisher agrees: for each shortlisted book, to pay $1,500 to The Giller Prize as a contribution towards shortlist advertising and promotion; to spend an appropriate sum on media advertising for the winning book; to prepare and encourage its nominated and/or winning author(s) to participate in all reasonable publicity associated with The Giller Prize; to use their best efforts to sticker copies of the shortlisted and/or winning book(s) with The Scotiabank Giller Prize seals (to be provided by The Prize) and, when including facsimiles of The Giller Prize seal on all reprints of the shortlisted and/or winning book(s), to secure the prior written approval of The Scotiabank Giller Prize with respect to artwork.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES:
Publishers may enter up to three full-length novels or short story collections, each of them scheduled for publication between October 16 of the previous year and October 15 of the current year. In addition to those three entries, publishers may submit books by authors who have previously won The Scotiabank Giller Prize or The Governor General's Award in the fiction category. Entries (finished books or galleys, not loose pages) are to be submitted according to the following schedule:

Books received after the final deadline will not be eligible. The Scotiabank Giller Prize also requests that publishers submit, by mid-August of the Prize year, a list of all eligible fiction scheduled for publication between mid-October of the previous year and mid-October of the current year. This list should include title(s), author(s), and date(s) of publication. The ScotiabankGiller Prize may, at any time, call in a book, even if that book has not been submitted. In that event, the publisher will be required to complete an entry form, submit the entry form along with five copies of the book to The Scotiabank Giller Prize, and comply with all other Rules and Regulations. Receipt of submissions will be acknowledged in writing by The Scotiabank Giller Prize. No book entered or called in will be returned to publishers. Five copies of each entry must be submitted together with a submission form along with press material on the submitted book, a current author biography and an 8x10 photo (or electronic image of the author sent by email) that can be reproduced for use in newspapers, magazines and on The Scotiabank Giller Prize website, www.scotiabankgillerprize.ca . If the submission is in the form of galleys, one copy of the finished book must be received by The Scotiabank Giller Prize (Elana Rabinovitch at the address above) by end of September and must be confirmed for publication on or before mid-October. Two copies of each shortlisted book, ideally in folded and collated form, should be retained by the publisher. These must be delivered to a designated book binder as soon as the shortlist has been announced. The Scotiabank Giller Prize will supply shortlisted publishers with the name and address of the bookbinder to which copies must be sent. The Scotiabank Giller Prize will bear the cost of this leather binding.
FINALISTS:
A shortlist of finalists will be announced at the beginning of October each Prize year. National publicity, promoting The Scotiabank Giller Prize and the shortlisted authors, will begin at that announcement and continue until after the winner is declared. The winner of The Giller Prize will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto in November. So that all shortlisted authors may attend that ceremony, The Scotiabank Giller Prize will bear the cost of travel and overnight accommodation for authors who live outside the greater Toronto area. The jury panel will select the shortlist and the winner in private deliberations immediately preceding each announcement. Publishers should be aware that they will receive no advance notice of the finalists or the winner.

The Governor General's Literary Awards are given annually to the best English-language and the best French-language book in each of the seven categories of Fiction, Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, Drama, Children's Literature (text), Children's Literature (illustration) and Translation. Each laureate receives $15,000 and a specially crafted copy of the winning book. In addition, publishers of winning titles receive a $3,000 grant for the promotion of the prize-winning book. Non-winning finalists each receive $1,000.
Professional book publishers are invited to submit titles for consideration. Books must be first foreign or first Canadian edition trade books that have been written, translated or illustrated by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. In the Translation category, the original work, must also be a Canadian-authored title. English titles must be published and be available on the market between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009.

Vincent Lemieux Prize 2009 The CPSA will award the prize, named after the eminent political scientist Professor Vincent Lemieux of the Université Laval, to the author of the best PhD thesis submitted and defended at a Canadian university, in 2005 or 2006, in English or in French, in any sub-field of political science. The prize is sponsored by Les Presses de l'Université Laval. A thesis is eligible only after nomination by the department of political science in which it was defended. A department in which five or fewer theses were defended in the two-year period may nominate one candidate. If six to ten were defended in the same period, two may be nominated. The W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize (Established 1998) Prizes: $15,000 given annually to a writer who has produced an outstanding body of work, has acted during his/her career as a "caring mentor" for writers, and has published a work of fiction or had a new stage play produced during the three-year period specified for each competition. Every third year the W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize will be awarded to a writer who works in French. Nominees must have an established track record of outstanding fiction or of produced stage plays which clearly demonstrates that they "didn't quit." It must be demonstrated that nominees have had a substantial impact as "caring mentors" by "looking over the shoulders" of other writers (in such ways as one-on-one advising, editing, teaching in writing workshops, in-residency stints). Nominees must be Canadian citizens. Members of the writing community (writers, playwrights, critics, publishers, directors, and/or artistic directors) may nominate candidates for this award. The Martyn Godfrey Young Writers' Award was created to honour the memory of Canadian children's author Martyn Godfrey who passed away in 2000 at the age of 51. The award will be an annual, juried writing competition open to all Canadian students in grades 7 through 9. Students will be asked to submit a humorous short story or first chapter of a humorous novel (between 500 and 1500 words) and a short application form. First Prize is $500; Second Prize is $200; and Third Prize is $100. This money is to be used to help fund the winners' participation in YouthWrite, the Writers' Guild of Alberta's summer writing camp for young people. The winning entries will be announced on April 17th, annually.

Innis, FRSC (1894-1952) and the sociologist Léeon Gérin, MSRC (1863-1951), who were Presidents of the Society during 1946-47 and 1933-34 respectively. The Medal is awarded for a distinguished and sustained contribution to the literature of the social sciences including human geography and social psychology. The award consists of a bronze medal and is awarded every two years if there is a suitable candidate.
