Alice Munroe Short Story Competition Update

"We chatted earlier via phone about the Alice Munroe Short Story Competition. I did indeed reach the co-ordinator through calling the Wingham paper. They are not running the competition this year as they got few entries last year. Alas!"

The World Can Be A Better Place Essay Contest ~~NEW~~ Deadline: July 31st, 2010

This competition gives grade 3 to 7 (age 8 to 13) including homeschoolers in Canada and the USA a chance to express their creativity by writing an essay on how they can change the world and make it into a better place for future generations. I am also accepting individual essays not through the school system. All essays will be judged according to its success in :using an engaging voice and writing style; originality of content ; clear purpose ; appropriate tone and natural word choice; organization and logic; writing mechanics and spelling. 1st Place Winners: $50 2nd Place Winners: $25 3rd Place Winners: $10 Full contest rules available here.

An entrant may submit only one (1) entry. There is a $5 entry fee (***Teacher Discount*** If entering as a class, fee will be $1 per student, up to 35 students/class) All entries must be postmarked by July 31st, 2010 and mailed to Anthony Hope, #33 15259 99 Ave, Surrey, BC, Canada, V3R7T7 Finalists and placement of finalists will be announced in August 2010 on the website. The 1st Book Competition ~~NEW~~ Deadline: May 31st, 2010

Just announced: Unpublished Manuscript Competition

Book-length fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction. Entry Fee: $55 Prizes: Publication in 2011 by Anvil Press; Eligibility:Canadian Resident; Blind Judging.

The national 1st Book Competition sponsored by the Writer's Studio at SFU, is looking for original, book-length manuscripts by emerging Canadian writers who haven't previously published a book. The winning entry in each category (fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry), will be published by Vancouver's Anvil Press in 2011. Annual Geist Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest Deadline EXTENDED: from November 1, 2009 to January 15,2010

Due to popular demand, the 6th Annual Geist Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest deadline for entries has been extended to January 15, 2010. AND entrants who sent in their stories for the original deadline (November 1, 2009) are welcome to submit an additional entry at no extra cost.

First Prize: $250; Second Prize: $150; Third Prize: $100; Honourable Mentions get swell Geist gifts (More than one prize per category per year may be awarded: over the years, we've averaged 1 first prize, 1.4 second prizes and 1.6 third prizes.)

Send us a postcard along with a story that relates to the image. The relationship can be as tangential as you like, so long as there is some clear connection to the image or place. Maximum length: 500 words, fiction or non-fiction. Winning entries will be published
